Sitting / standing for prolonged periods reduce the circulation of fluid within your legs as the calf muscle is inactive.
Hence, it would be beneficial if external compression could be exerted on the lower limbs to mimic the calf pump, ensuring blood flow is not compromised even when the natural calf pump is inactive.
Current methods implemented to ensure the calf pump remains active whilst carrying out tasks that require to be seated/standing is the use of active workstations such as a treadmill or pedal stations.
However, in the case of healthcare professional this would result in hindering in carrying out the task at hand, which would have profound consequences. Further, in the case of a traveler, it is not feasible nor comfortable to use such devices whilst in a plane/coach. Another modality undertaken is to place the legs at an elevated position so as to counteract the effects of gravity. Again, this would require the person to stop the task being carried out for the legs to be placed elevated and also have adequate space to elevate your legs.
Static compression socks can provide compression to the lower limbs to provide pressure to the lower limbs [16]. However, the graded compressions socks do not provide active compression, and require to be worn over a long period to see any benefits.
Pneumatic Compression Devices (PCD) reduce the time taken to show an increase in circulation by providing Active Compression. Active compression is an effective way to improve circulation, flush lactic acid, and increase oxygenation to muscle tissues to get you back on your feet faster. PCDs apply external compression to the lower limbs to mimic the calf pump. However, existing PCDs are not mobile, but are compression sleeves that are tethered to a bulky pump. This prevents the user from carrying out any other practical task while the external compression is being applied.
